Tenkara Fishing on Smith’s Creek…

21 01 2011

Yesterday I finally got my boots wet again this year. The fishery is a small creek, stocked with trout almost year-round. It’s currently in a “delayed harvest” season, wherein all trout must be released and only artificial lures may be used. This makes for a creek full of fish – but they also feed these guys once a week…or at least they used to 5 or 6 years ago. I ended up catching only 6 or 7, but I was fiddling with the new rod and new camera more than I was fishing I guess. I also had plenty of frustrating interactions with trees, as I tried to get a handle on fishing with a fixed 11-12 ft. line.

Anyway, enjoy the video and don’t laugh too much at me in my …uhmmmm….shrunken waders. I’m sure my wife washed them and dried them on “high” this fall. I’m sure of it. Absolutely sure.

Thanks for no closeups of the shrunken waders, beautiful looking water. Singing wasn’t too disturbing this time. Thanks for that as well. Looks like you’re getting this Tenkara thing down pretty well. Good job.

I dunno Howard! I was telling River Damsel tonight that I edited out all the parts where I was “fishin’ for squirrels!” 🙂 LOL

nice underwater shots. not sure about any glitch just after 3:00.

I didn’t see a glitch.

And where the heck did you pull that net from while fishing the spillway?

Maybe it’s just my PC – anyone else not see a glitch after 3:00 mark….just as I hooked that first fish? I’d rather it be my pc, to be honest with you. haha. the net i had tucked in my belt at about 11:00 position. worked pretty well. easier to get to than behind my back.

Sweet vid. Really gets exciting around 1:13! You’ve got quite the knack for editing. No glitch on my side… BTW, gotta love those measure nets.

Thanks Mike. I’m glad no one sees the glitch but me. I’ll edit that part of the post I guess. I’m just glad it’s not the camera – it’s only the second or third time I’ve used it! I just edit out all the “windknots and tangled lines” 😉 ha! I really like that measure net. First fish I measured took me about 2 seconds and the thing is light as a feather. You do have to have it turned the right way though or it’ll mess with your eyes.

What? You start at 15 every time? Lol.

I have a measure net too and have two complaints:

1. Mine is covered in oil for some reason, like they dipped it in Vaseline. It leaves an oil slick downstream and makes my hand sticky. I’m not sure why but it is kinda gross.
2. The tether is elastic, so when I hang it from my back it hangs low and bounces around. I’d rather it have a nice non-stretchy tether.

You guys have similar experiences?

My MN is not isn’t slick or slimy. It’s fine. You might have just gotten a bad bag. Did you try emailing them for a replacement bag?

I don’t hang it from my back, I hang it from a belt loop on my left side (I wear hip waders most of the time). I don’t really even notice it.

PS – to my orig. reply – I noticed tonight that mine doesn’t have a stretchy cord, but a twisted rope type thing. that’s what you get for being an early adopter I guess, man. A slinky cord and a stinky bag. 🙂 sorry… 😉

Mine isn’t slick or slimey. Maybe yours had something spilled on it in shipping? Although, mine came in a plastic bag. Hmm….that’s really odd, isn’t it?
It worked ok under my wading belt, but I’m hoping to think of another alternative. It’s so light, I forgot it was there most of the time.

RD, I don’t know why I can’t reply to your post but no button. Anyway, I start at 15? Say what? I’m lost. (as usual!) 🙂

I am simply amazed on how many “INCOMING” fish you can get with a tenkara rod! It must also have something to do with that legend of Smith’s Creek…

Yeah, I didn’t get into that on purpose. The Legend of Smith Creek is suitable only for sharing around a campfire. In Colorado. So…;)

Enjoyed the video. I have a Kodak Playsport too. What software do you use to edit? Looks to be more sophisticated than what comes with the camera. Keep ’em comin’.

Flatlander, I use Windows Live Movie Maker. It’s a free download I believe from the Microsoft page. However, I am NOT a big fan of the program. It’s very user-friendly, but not very stable. If you try it, remember to save often. Glad you liked the video. I was supposed to make another today, but plans got rearranged a bit.
